9 marks over 5 questions.
All of the following questions draw upon these equations:
sin θ = λ/b
nλ = d sin θ
fringe spacing y = λD / d

...which you are given in the exam.

These questions only scratch the surface, so be aware that you might need to apply them a little more creatively in the exam.

"x10-4" is written as "*10-4"
1. Light passing through a 0.10 mm slit has a wavelength of 5.0 µm.
In degrees (deg), what is the angular position of the first minimum?
[2]
2. What is the wavelength of light passed though a 5.0 mm slit if its first minimum is at 10°? [2]
3. What is the angular position of the second order maxima when λ = 900 nm and d = 500 µm? [2]
4. Find d when the angular position of the first order maxima is 15.0° and the wavelength of light used is 450 nm.

Don't worry about units, your answer is in μm.

5. A student called Rick O'Shea carries out Young's double-slit arrangement.

He uses light of wavelength 1.0 µm, the space between the two slits being 0.50 mm, the distance to the large screen being 1.0 m.

What will be the fringe spacing observed?
