When you analyse a text for it's genre, you just need to make notes on a series of things:
- settings
- place and location
- time
- characters
- stars
- storylines
- the typical story situations and climaxes
- key signs
- music
- messages.
Example
If you were to analyse a film from the western genre:
- settings
- place and location - a town in the American West
- time - mid 1800s
- characters - cowboys, Indians and sheriffs
- stars - Clint Eastwood, John Wayne
- storylines - bank robbed
- the typical story situations and climaxes - shootout
- key signs - guns, period costumes
- music - country, banjo, harmonica
- messages - the hero always wins.
